5 things every small business website needs

A website should earn its keep, not just exist. Here are the five things every small business website needs to win trust and turn visitors into customers.

  • Websites
  • Business

Plenty of small business websites are just digital business cards — they sit there looking pretty and do nothing. A good website is a hard worker: it builds trust and turns visitors into enquiries. Here are five things yours needs to do exactly that.

1. Load fast

People decide whether to stay within a couple of seconds, and Google ranks fast sites higher. If your site is slow on a phone, you're losing customers before they've even seen what you offer. Speed isn't a nice-to-have — it's the foundation.

2. Work perfectly on a phone

Most of your visitors are on their phone. If your site is fiddly to use on a small screen — tiny text, buttons that are hard to tap, things that overflow — they'll leave. Mobile isn't an afterthought; for most businesses it's the main event.

3. Make it obvious what you do (and who for)

Within seconds of landing, a visitor should know exactly what you offer, who it's for, and why you. No clever riddles, no wall of jargon — just a clear, confident message.

4. A clear call to action

Every page should gently point to one next step: call, book, enquire, buy. If a visitor has to hunt for how to get in touch, most won't bother. Make the next step obvious and easy.

5. Show you can be trusted

People buy from businesses they trust. Real photos, genuine reviews, clear contact details and a professional design all quietly tell a visitor "these people are the real deal." (A few honest testimonials go a long way here.)

The thread that ties it together

Notice the theme: every one of these is about your customer, not about showing off. A website that loads fast, works on a phone, says what you do, points to a clear next step, and earns trust will quietly bring in work for years.

If your current site is missing a few of these — or you don't have one yet — let's fix that. Tell me about your business and I'll show you what's possible.
